A Quick Update on the 5 AM Club

This is yet another quick update, as I have been busy with a few things as of late. It also doesn’t help that I got sick with the common cold for the first time in a while. As a result, this is going to be more of an off-the-cuff update.

Specifically, I’m going to talk briefly about how I’ve been part of the 5 AM Club for the past three weeks now (going on the fourth week tomorrow) as I’ve detailed in my previous blog entry. The biggest change is how I managed to get my girlfriend onboard with it starting last week. I’m pleasantly surprised that she’s joined me on waking up early to dedicate an hour of time to self-improvement.

Something I didn’t really discuss too much in the previous entry, however, deals with how we approach weekends. It gets mentioned just as briefly as the original book does when the Entrepreneur asks the Millionaire about it, but she asked him something along the lines of whether it was fine to only wake up before 5 AM on weekdays and sleep in on the weekends, or if it had to be strictly every single day. As the Millionaire responds (his first of only two responses to a question like this), he says that the routine can be adapted to fit your lifestyle and needs. As a result, it led to my girlfriend and I waking up at 4:40 AM due to her morning routine being a bit more involved.

Getting sick also gave me a bit of leeway to wake up later, although my idea of later is still close to 5 AM overall. One day last week I chose to wake up at 5:10 AM and skip the exercise just because I was feeling under the weather, so I went briefly through my morning routine (brushing my teeth, making the bed, and so on) just to go straight into reflection and growth, as per the “20/20/20” rule.

Despite my obvious deviation from the routine, I do like how the Millionaire mentions making everything fit one’s needs, but I only wish he stressed it a little more within the book, as I could see someone who read through it feeling guilty about not doing everything perfectly. If I’m still waking up early and using my victory hour to improve myself in tangible ways over time, I’m still getting something good out of the whole routine. I sometimes feel guilty about not working out when I’m sick, and I have read a lot of conflicting testimony on whether or not it’s a good idea to workout while sick. (Some people say that rest is essential while others insinuate that you can “sweat out” a cold and get better faster.) Despite that, I know that I’ll be able to dive right back into working out once I’m better soon.

That’s it for now. I’m still thinking about the next books that I might feature in an upcoming Sudo Science Book Club.
